The growth in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing applications and the consequent need to monitor, shape and police traffic has seen a growth in deployment of dedicated infrastructure known as traffic shapers and management systems. The need to maintain quality of experience for IPTV, VoD, VoIP and time sensitive data applications increase the pressure on network operators to establish the right control mechanisms.

P2P continues to evolve and will not disappear in the near future. New applications have been developed based on P2P methodologies. In the illegal arena, file sharing applications are evolving in an attempt to outwit Traffic Shapers. Some of the concepts include encryption. On the commercial side, new P2P applications have been developed and some methods are being applied to legitimate applications such as Video streaming.

Equipment manufacturers and service providers tasked with testing Traffic Shaping infrastructure require a flexible performance, load and QoS/QoE solution. Shenick diversifEye™ provides the ability to test the latest versions of P2P applications coupled with multiple IP applications. A key characteristic of this type of testing is to emulate and assess the effectiveness of P2P traffic detection, shaping and mitigation on a per port, per application flow basis. Network operators need to assess Traffic Shaping functionality which includes QoS verification and QoE assurance for their customers. The goal is to assure a fully functioning high performance network, while maximizing bandwidth usage, stopping illegal P2P traffic applications and passing legitimate P2P traffic.

For example, with the rollout of Triple Play applications the policy settings within traffic shaping devices will impact on QoS and home user quality of experience (QoE).

Why diversifEye™

diversifEye™ enables per application flow emulation control with QoS assignment and individual 'virtual user' profiles for highly granular traffic shaping and traffic management system testing.

diversifEye™ supports a mix of stateful application flows, this includes a full suite of P2P applications. Other stateful applcations include HTTP, VoIP, VoD, SMTP/POP3, IP Streaming and Multicast IPTV (IGMP/MLDv2).

Analysis and performance can be completed in real time and long-run end to end analysis on a per application flow basis.

Immediately ascertain the ability of traffic shaper/management system to act upon individual application flow types such as throttling/mitigating P2P traffic.
